Portuguese Learning Resources

SPS is occasionally contacted by both University students as well as private individuals interested in Portuguese and who wish to supplement their coursework, maintain proficiency, or learn on their own. Below is a list of resources available to all, many at low or no cost. Some of these resources may also be applicable to those learning other languages as well.

Apps

Duolingo: A popular free app for learning foreign languages.  May be used alone or as a supplement to a language class.
ITalki: An online language learning platform which connects language learners and teachers through video chat. The site allows students to find online teachers for 1-on-1 tutoring.
HelloTalk:  A free app for text chats with native speaker of a foreign language.

Open e-textbooks

Bate-Papo: An Introduction to Portuguese:  An open-source e-textbook created under Creative Commons license by Eduardo Viana da Silva, Senior Lecturer of Portuguese at University of Washington.
Português para Principiantes: An e-textbook by Severino J. Albuquerque, Professor of Portuguese at University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Podcasts

Produced by the Brazilpod at the University of Texas at Austin:

  • Língua da Gente: A series of Portuguese-language podcasts.
  • Tá Falado: A series of podcasts designed to aid in the pronunciation of Portuguese. Of particular interest to students with a previous background in Spanish.
  • Conversa Brasileira: A compilation of short video clips in which Brazilian speakers of Portuguese discuss a variety of everyday conversational topics.
