Students who participate in a study abroad program sponsored by other departments should be aware of the following:

Before you go...

UPDATED – STUDY ABROAD POLICY

Students can take a maximum of 15 credits towards the major in Spanish, a maximum of 12 credits towards the minor in Spanish, and 10 credits in Spanish for General Studies credit, through study abroad program.

If you are not studying abroad in one of our department-sponsored programs, please meet with the academic advisor (spsadv@uw.edu) preferably a month in advance. Note that credit is granted for work done at a regionally-accredited foreign or US university or college only. Credit is not granted for work done at language schools/institutes/academies. Also note that total credits are assigned using the following ratios, regardless of the number of credits recommended by the study abroad program or UW Study Abroad:

Language/grammar/conversation courses:  80 classroom hours=6 credits

Content courses, such as literary and cultural studies:  10 classroom hours=1 credit

When you return...

If you were concurrently enrolled at the UW while abroad, you will need to meet with an UW Study Abroad Advisor (Schmitz Hall 459) before your credits can be processed by Spanish & Portuguese Studies. Once you have a Credit Evaluation Form, please assemble all of your study abroad materials, including copies of your syllabi, study abroad transcript, and coursework; and bring them to our advisor at Padelford Hall C-104. You should allow two weeks for the evaluation to be completed, and will receive an email when your materials are ready for pick up.
