Spanish 110 - Accelerated Elementary Spanish

Course Description

SPANISH 110 is an accelerated course that covers the equivalent of Spanish 101 and Spanish 102, the first two courses of the First-Year Spanish Language Program at the University of Washington. These elementary-level language courses have been designed to develop basic communication skills in both oral and written Spanish. By introducing the learner to the rich culture of the Spanish-speaking world, including the Hispanic/Latinx communities in the U.S., this course aims also to develop students’ intercultural knowledge and understanding.

Spanish 110 is open to students who have not taken Spanish language classes before or scored less than 3 in any of the four sections (reading, writing, listening and speaking) of the placement test. For more information, see Spanish placement test.

This course may not be taken in addition to Spanish 101 or Spanish 102.

    VERY IMPORTANT: You can purchase your book at the UW Bookstore or online at Klett World Languages. We strongly recommend you buy it online. If buying online, use THIS LINK to ensure you get the correct materials for your course. You can choose between the digital only book (digital book + The KWL Hub) or the bundle (printed book + digital book + The KWL Hub).
    VERY IMPORTANT: If you already have your textbook from a previous quarter, you will need to exchange your BlinkLearning license (valid until summer 2025) for a KWL Hub license (required for autumn 2025 onward). To obtain your KWL Hub license, please complete this FORM.
  • Conversifi (4 token bundle). During the first week of classes, your teacher will provide you with instructions to purchase the 4 token bundle and a code for registering with Conversifi.

GRADING SCALE

0.7 is the minimum grade needed to pass SPANISH 110.
2.0 is the minimum grade needed in SPANISH 103 to fulfill the foreign language requirement.

Students' Responsibilities

THIS COURSE IS TAUGHT IN PERSON. As a student in this class, it is your responsibility to:

  • Attend class everyday. The class will meet in person, five times per week, Monday to Friday.
  • Participate in all classroom activities, making an effort to use Spanish as much as possible.
  • Come to class always prepared, having read and studied the materials assigned by your instructor.
  • Submit all assignments on the due date, regardless of whether you are present in class or not.
  • Contact a classmate when missing a class to get updated on classroom activities and assignments. You are responsible for all material presented in class and all assigned homework, whether you are present in class or not.
  • Check your email everyday and visit the course webpage and Canvas site regularly to keep updated on important class information and changes on due dates.
  • Follow common courtesy norms and silence your cellular phone before class begins.

SPANISH LANGUAGE
Spanish is the language of communication in the class, from day one. English will be kept to a minimum by both the teacher and the students.

NONBINARY LANGUAGE
In this class, we will make every effort to use inclusive and nonbinary language. Teachers and students are expected to respect each other’s chosen names and pronouns in both spoken and written interactions. In Spanish, pronouns include él (he), ella (she), and elle (nonbinary they). The ending -e can be added to form neutral nouns, e.g., todes (everybody). You are encouraged to use the pronouns that best reflect your identity when introducing yourself and when writing or speaking about yourself. Additional guidance on the use of non-binary and inclusive language will be provided in class.

GRADES
You will have access to your grades via Gradebook throughout the entire term. It is your responsibility to make sure the information on your Gradebook is correct and updated. It there is a problem with a grade, you should contact your instructor as soon as possible.

OFFICE HOURS
Remember that your teacher is available outside class to answer any question you may have concerning either the content of the course or your performance on it. If you think you need extra help or have problems with any aspect of the course, make sure to contact them before it is too late. If their office hours do not work for you, schedule an appointment at a different time. Do not discuss personal issues with your teacher during class time.
