Summer Camp in Portuguese and Cybersecurity at The University of Washington for High School Students

Submitted by Casey Colvin on

The Language Learning Center in collaboration with the Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies is offering a Portuguese Cybersecurity Summer Camp Program at the UW for high school students. This is an opportunity for high school students in the United States to become familiarized with the principles of Cybersecurity, while learning and/or improving their Portuguese Language Skills. We are offering two online programs: an asynchronous 3-week program (July 12-30th, 2021) or a combination of a 3-week asynchronous (July 12-30th, 2021) and one-week synchronous program (Aug 2-6th, 2021).

To be eligible, students must be currently in high school and speak Portuguese and/or Spanish at an intermediate level or higher. Heritage and/or AP students of Portuguese and/or Spanish are encouraged to apply.

This summer camp is funded by NSA GenCyber, which is managed by the same department as STARTALK. This is the first time that NSA has funded a GenCyber program in a language other than English. We really want to show what’s possible and, hopefully, attract more funding in future years for more languages. This initiative is also being supported by the UW Center for Global Studies, UW Center for Information Assurance and Cybersecurity (CIAC), the UW Center for Global Studies, and the Division of Computing & Software Systems at UW Bothell.
