On Thursday, June 6, Sarah McKay, a junior double major in Spanish and Creative Writing, did a public presentation of the ad hoc honors project she did for Spanish 424 Winter Quarter 2019. The class, “Poetry and Music,” concentrated on Spanish peninsular poets and musical versions of their texts. Sarah’s project is a webpage that parallels what we studied in class, but is centered on two Latin American poets (one man, one woman) from each of five different countries, and the musical versions of their poems. She analyses each poem and the music that accompanies it, and also includes a linguistic commentary on the differences between the Spanish of each country. This is a brilliant example of public humanities and exemplifies how digital technology can enhance our reading and understanding of poetry.
