Placement Testing Information

Students who took Spanish or Portuguese in high school must take a Placement Test before being eligible to register for classes.

100-level Spanish Placement Test Score Ranges

0-15 points: Eligible for 101
16-44 points: Eligible for 102
10-44 points AND two years of high school Spanish: Eligible for 110
45-69 points: Eligible for 103
70+: Eligible for 201*

*Students with scores of 70+ are also eligible to take the 200-level Spanish placement exam. Students must schedule an appointment with the Office of Educational Assessment in order to take the 200-level exam. It is important to note that it can take about 2 weeks for the 200-level Spanish placement exams to be graded and posted to student records, and they are not graded during quarter breaks.

200-level Spanish Placement Test Score Ranges

0-75 points: Eligible for 201
76-145 points: Eligible for 202
146-165 points: Eligible for 203
166-175 points: Eligible for 301

Portuguese Placement

Students who take the Portuguese placement exam are placed based on the Portuguese instructor's assessment. Please contact the Office of Educational Assessment for test schedule information.

Graduate Student Foreign Language Requirement

An exam is available for graduate students who need to comply with a foreign language requirement in Spanish or Portuguese. Please contact the Office of Educational Assessment for schedule information.
