In Memoriam: Dr. Stella Moreno Monroy

SPS learned earlier this year of the passing of Dr. Stella Moreno Monroy.  Dr. Moreno was a Professor of Spanish and Latin American Literature at Central Washington University, and earned her PhD at University of Washington in 1991.

Born November 20, 1948 in Bogota, Colombia, Dr. Moreno earned her BA from Universidad de los Andes and began her career in journalism and public relations before, starting in 1983, pursuing graduate studies at UW, where she earned her Masters and later her PhD.

Dr. Moreno taught at Central Washington University for 31 years. According to Central Washington University, “… [she] will be remembered for her passionate advocacy of humanities education. She took pride in being a leader for the Latino and Latin American Studies program, serving as director from 2012-17.”  Dr. Moreno also “supported Ellensburg’s Hispanic community by serving on the board of directors of the Apoyo food bank and advocating for Spanish-speaking residents of Ellensburg.”

Dr. Moreno passed away August 10th, 2019 while visiting family in Colombia.  A memorial service for Dr. Moreno was held October 19th. On March 3rd, CWU hosted the Stella Moreno Collection Dedication and Poetry Reading at Brooks Library.  Her obituary may be viewed on legacy.com.
