100/200-Level Courses

General Policies

  • All undergraduate students who qualify for 100 or 200-level Spanish courses are eligible to register via MyUW during Period One, whether currently in the Spanish sequence or not.

  • We do not accept undergraduate overloads in our courses.  With departmental permission, on a first-come-first-served basis, we may accept one graduate student overload in each of the following language courses, SPAN 101, 102, 103, 110, 121, 122, 122, 201, 202, 203, and 210.  Interested graduate students should request permission of the class instructor directly via e-mail, with a copy to spsuw@uw.edu.

  • If a class is full, students should sign up for Notify.UW service https://notify.uw.edu/tos/ and keep checking the Time Schedule through the third day of the quarter for possible openings.

***For more detailed information regarding this process, please see this page.***

  • Students may not enroll in our courses after the third day of the quarter.

  • Audits are not allowed in our language courses.

  • Repeats in language courses are usually not allowed. A maximum of one repeat in 103, 123 and 134 may be considered if resulting from unforseen circumstances.

  • Students may only enroll in one Spanish or Portuguese grammar course at a time.

SPAN 110

Students with at least two years of high school Spanish AND a placement test score of 10-44 are eligible for this class.

SPAN 121-122-123

This is a beginning Spanish series offered in the Autumn, Winter, and Spring quarters, respectively. This "immersion" series parallels 101-102-103, and therefore, credit is not allowed for both sequences. More specifically, students who already have credit for SPAN 101 will not receive credit for SPAN 121, students who already have credit for SPAN 102/110 will not receive credit for SPAN 121 or 122, and students who already have credit for SPAN 103 will not receive credit for SPAN 121, 122, or 123. In addition, students who completed at least two years of Spanish in high school are not able to receive credit for the 121 portion of this sequence.

The policy above applies to students who took the SPAN 121-122-123 sequence Autumn 2003 or later.

SPAN 134 (summer intensive course)

The 15-credit intensive SPAN 134 course, offered in the summer, has a similar credit policy as the 121-122-123 series. This course utlilizes the same methods as 121-122-123, and is equivalent to completing SPAN 101, 102 and 103 in one intensive summer course. Students who already have credit for SPAN 101 (or 121) will receive only 10 credits for SPAN 134, students who already have credit for SPAN 102/110 (or 122) will receive only 5 credits for SPAN 134, and students who already have credit for SPAN 103 (or 123) will not receive any credit for SPAN 134. In addition, students who completed at least two years of Spanish in high school receive only 10 credits for SPAN 134.

The policy above applies to students who took SPAN 134 Summer 2003 or later.
