El Día del Libro | Book Day in Seattle

Instituto Cervantes Seattle | Spanish & Portuguese Studies

Wednesday, April 23, 2014 - 12:00am
University of Washington

The Cervantes Institute Seattle is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting Spanish language and culture. We are proud to announce this year we will be celebrating El Día del Libro (Book Day).

El Día del libro is a Spanish tradition that began in the 1920s. The date was chosen to honor the deaths of Miguel de Cervantes, Inca Garcilaso de la Vega and William Shakespeare, which were all the 23rd of April. Today in Spain, as well as around the world, the holiday promotes literacy and a love for books by the exchange of books among loved ones.

In the past few years a movement has begun to de-commercialize El Día del Libro. The organization 1010 Ways to Buy a Book Without Money promotes the idea of a moneyless economy, in which books can be exchanged without money. Since starting in Barcelona in 2011, they have hosted events in 13 cities worldwide and have “sold” hundreds of books in exchange for moneyless prices that require the buyer to do a good deed, rather than use cash. Prices can be as simple as “Hug a stranger,” or as grand as “Become an organ donor.” Each book has a unique price, often coinciding with its theme or content.

Participate by donating books!

In order to make this event a reality, we are requesting book donations. We would love books on any topic you think people would enjoy, especially literature in Spanish or related to Hispanic culture. Feel free to invent your own “prices,” otherwise we are happy to create them for you. Examples include “Call your mom and tell her you love her in Spanish”, “Cook someone a nice meal” or “Sing a song in Spanish”. This is a great way to de-clutter your office while ensuring your well-loved books find a good home.
