This seminar studies Colombian writer Gabriel García Márquez’s masterpiece novel (1967) in the context of the Latin American new-narrative “boom” and the improbable trope—or manifesto—of magical realism.  Class activities include close reading, literary analysis, discussions, group work, presentations, quiet writing, debates, and visual, literary, and/or musical analysis.

Catalog Description: 
Focuses on an individual Latin American author or a special topic in Latin American literature. May be repeated once. Prerequisite: either SPAN 301, SPAN 302, SPAN 303, SPAN 310, SPAN 314, SPAN 315, SPAN 316, or SPAN 330.
